Explore the topic of travel experience   by asking questions:

1)    Can   you name some countries or cities you’d like to visit someday? (popular destinations: America, England,   Australia, Singapore, Beijing, New York, Paris, Rome, Dubai…)

2)    What   makes a pleasant trip? (beautiful   scenery, smooth journey, exciting activities, friendly people, delicious   food, comfortable hotel, great weather, clean and tidy environment…)

3)    How much are you willing to pay for   it? (better service at lower price)

Pronounce the new vocabulary for the   class to repeat and explain them briefly.

Step 1

Read the passage quickly for the first time to get the   general idea and answer the questions.

1)      What’s the main idea of this passage? (The author shared his travel experience and some tips for saving   money.)

2)      Where did the author visit? (Rome, Italy)

How did he   feel about his trip? (pleasant, lucky,   low-cost )

Step 2

Read the passage again carefully and choose the travel   tips mentioned. Ask students to mark the sentences from which they get the   answer.

Step 3

Analyze the text.

Para. 1: introduce the topic of   how to make trip smooth and within budget.

Para. 2-5: explain the tips by the   author’s travel experience.

Para. 6: state the importance of   making plan before traveling.

Steps 4

Take a close look at the passage   sentence by sentence with some translation. Focus on the new vocabulary and   expression, give detailed explanation of them and ask the students to make   sentences. Then analyze the difficult sentence structures and ask students to   translate them based on their understanding.

Ask students to read the passage aloud   sentence by sentence in turn to practice their pronunciation.

1)    Where   have you gone for traveling? How do you think about it? (most unforgettable experiences, both pleasant and unpleasant)

2)    What   can you learn from your travel experience? Give some suggestions on a   well-planned trip. (tips: itinerary,   transportation, lodging and accommodation, necessities… )

3Ask students   to list as many tips as they can, then give a presentation.

1.     Background information

Rome

Rome one of the most beautiful and historical cities around the world, is the capital of Italy and the most populated and largest city in Italy. Rome, the “Eternal City”, has been a sacred place and internationally important city since ancient times. Its history extends nearly 2,800 years. The city is full of culture, religion and history. Surrounded by many monuments, palaces, basilicas, piazzas, churches, aqueducts, fountains and old Houses, the whole historic center was declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO.

 

St. Peter’s

St. Peter’s is a church in the Renaissance style located in the Vatican City. Its central dome dominates the skyline of Rome. St. Peter’s is the most renowned work of Renaissance architecture and remains one of the largest churches in the world. It has been described as “holding a unique position in the Christian world” and as “the greatest of all churches of Christendom”.

 

Vatican City

Vatican City, officially Vatican City State, is a walled enclave within the city of Rome. With an area of approximately 44 hectares (110 acres), and a population of 842, it is the smallest internationally recognized independent state in the world by both area and population.

1) budget the money that is available to an organization or person, or a plan of how it will be spent预算,预算费

Eg. They had to keep within a tight budget.

   The boss wished that the project would be completed within budget.

a tight budget (=when there is not much money available) 紧缩的预算

on/within budget (=not costing more money than planned) over budget (=costing more money than planned) 在预算内

 

2) itinerary a plan or list of the places you will visit on a journey旅程,路线; 旅行日程

 Eg. Before you turn to your itinerary, let me explain a little further.

   At this stage of the itinerary I propose to suspend the journey south.

 

3) accommodation a place for someone to stay, live, or work住处,膳宿;调节

Eg. The house has good sized accommodation.

   We shall persuade them to bring it back into use for the benefit of those in temporary accommodation.

 

4) discount a reduction in the usual price of something折扣;贴现率

Eg. I can arrange a discount if you’re interested.

   This has allowed us to keep that discount and work toward perhaps improving that discount.

5) in cash 用现金,有现款

Eg. I put down a hundred thousand in cash and took out an eighty-thousand mortgage.

   The last prize to be given was $1,000 in cash.

Eg. If this is your preferred way of traveling, I have no place to make any negative judgments about you. 

All people have experience of negative emotions such as fear and anger.

 Eg. While it is convenient to have lots of equipment at your disposal, it is by no means essential.

   Progress work may not be the most exciting job in advertising but it is a highly responsible and essential one.

Eg. The following story shows how a small adjustment can make a big difference.

   It would make a big difference to property values in the area — some would go up, some would go down.

 

3.     Difficult sentences

1)    Believe it or not, doing it right and doing it within budget takes a little skillknowledge and practice.

信不信由你,要想使旅行在预算内顺利的开展是需要一点技巧,知识和实践经验的。

分析:该句主语为两个动词不定式短语做主语,谓语动词用三人称单数。

 

2)    A little research can save you a lot of money, time, uncertainty and other negative experiences that can be bought on by arriving in a foreign place.

提前做一点点功课就能帮你节省大量的费用和时间,降低各种不确定性,减少来到异地他乡可能带来的不适。

分析:该句中that 引导的从句做定语修饰experiences

3)    The walk to the hotel was made even more pleasant by the fact that we were not overburdened with baggage.

我们没有过重的行李负担这个事实使这次步行去酒店更加的愉快。

分析:该句中that引导同谓语从句,表示对“fact”内容的详细解释。与定语从句相比,同位语从句在从句中不做成分,并且关系代词that不能省略。
