2. While-Reading Step 1 Read the passage quickly for the first time to get the general idea and answer the questions. 1) What’s the main idea of this passage? (President Roosevelt’s house was once broken into and lots of things were stolen. He didn’t get frustrated, instead, he found three reasons to be very grateful.) 2) List the three reasons Roosevelt found to be grateful when he suffered being stolen.(Firstly, the thief only stole things from him but didn’t hurt him at all; secondly, the thief only stole some things instead of all his things; thirdly, most luckily for him, it was that man rather than Roosevelt who became a thief.) 3) What do you learn from President Roosevelt’s story? (One should manage to see the positive side of things, which may not be always going great. A positive choice stems from a positive attitude.) Step 2 Read the passage again carefully and complete the sentences on page 17 with the words or expressions in the box. 1. Background information
President Roosevelt
Theodore Roosevelt, or “Teddy Roosevelt”, (27 October 1858 – 6 January 1919) is the 26th President of the United States. A Nobel Peace Prize winner, an accomplished author, hunter, explorer, Teddy Roosevelt mastered many arts during his lifetime. Few presidents were so beloved while they were in office. Even fewer make for as interesting a study as Teddy Roosevelt does nearly 100 years after he left the office. Teddy Roosevelt also left American people with numerous gifts to remember him by—several of the national parks.
Winston Churchill
Sir Winston Churchill (30 November 1874 – 24 January 1965) was a British prime minister and statesman who led the country to victory against Nazi Germany and the Axis powers in World War II. Churchill was also an officer in the British Army, a historian, a writer, and an artist. He is the only British prime minister to have received the Nobel Prize in Literature, and was the first person to be made an Honorary Citizen of the United States.

3. Difficult sentence structures
