Part I Listening Task
Script for the recording:
Limited tickets for the White House tour were handed out early, so my friend Susan and I got going before 7 a.m. We hadn't come all the way from Texas to miss our chance to get in.
It was a chilly morning, and everyone on Pennsylvania Avenue was bundled up. "Hold your purse close," Susan murmured. "I've got my whole life in my bag, and those kids are watching us." She nodded toward a couple of threatening-looking teenagers.
We crossed the street. Just as we got to the sidewalk, Susan stumbled and fell.
"Stop thief!" she yelled. The kids had pushed her down and were running away up the hill with her purse.
"Stop thief!" I yelled, running after the kids. Lord, help! I'll never catch them!
People on the street took up the call. "Stop thief!" they yelled, pointing at the purse snatchers. The kids weaved in and out of the crowd, knocking everyone aside. They disappeared over the top of the hill. As I staggered up, out of breath, a man appeared in front of me. He was dressed all in white with not even a coat—strange on a day like this. He handed me Susan's purse!
Susan limped up behind me. "Can you believe it?" I said, handing it to her. "This man here.... " I gestured beside me. The man in white was nowhere to be seen.
