I. Nursing Home

A nursing home, convalescent home, care home or rest home provides a type of care residents: it is a place of residence for people who require constant nursing care and have significant deficiencies with activities of daily life. Residents include the elderly adults with physical or mental disabilities. Eligible adults, aged 18 or older, can stay in a skilled nursing facility to receive physical, occupational, and other rehabilitative therapies following an accident or illness.

Services provided in nursing homes include services from nurses, nursing aides and assistants; physical, occupational and speech therapists; social workers and recreational assistants; and room and board.

II. Nursing Homes inChina

China will face a dramatic transition from a young to an aged society in the coming 30 to 40 years. In 2000, there were 88,110,000 people aged 65 years and older, which represented 7% of the population. This percentage is projected to increase to 23% in 2050. Regarding health and long-term care for older adults, the current challenge is to build a comprehensive system of care for older adults. Nursing home care is an inevitable care model for frail old adults inChina, which is largely sponsored by the government ofChinawith contributions from some nongovernment organizations and private investors.

i. Enjoy the Song – Love Story

Listen to the song “Love Story” and fill in the missing words.

Love Story

We were both young, when I first saw you.

I close my eyes and the flashback starts.

I’m standing there,

on a balcony in summer air.

I see the lights; see the party, the ball gowns.
I see you make your way through the crowd.
You say hello,
little did I know...

That you were Romeo, you were throwing pebbles.
And my daddy said “stay away from Juliet”.
And I was crying on the staircase.
begging you please don’t go...
And I said...

Romeo take me somewhere, we can be alone
I’ll be waiting; all there’s left to do is run.
You’ll be the prince and I’ll be the princess.
It’s a love story, baby, just say yes.

So I sneak out to the garden to see you.
We keep quiet, because we’re dead if they knew.
So close your eyes...
escape this town for a little while.
Oh, Oh.

Cause you were Romeo, I was a scarlet letter.
And my daddy said “stay away from Juliet”,
but you were everything to me.
I was begging you, please don’t go.
And I said...

Romeo take me somewhere, we can be alone.
I’ll be waiting; all there’s left to do is run.
You’ll be the prince and I’ll be the princess.
It’s a love story, baby, just say yes.

Romeo save me, they’re trying to tell me how to feel.
This love is difficult, but it’s real.
Don’t be afraid, we’ll make it out of this mess.
It’s a love story, baby, just say yes.
Oh, Oh.

I got tired of waiting.

Wondering if you were ever coming around.
My faith in you was fading.
When I met you on the outskirts of town.
And I said...

Romeo save me, I’ve been feeling so alone.
I keep waiting, for you but you never come.
Is this in my head, I don’t know what to think.
He knelt to the ground and pulled out a ring and said...

Marry me Juliet, you’ll never have to be alone.
I love you, and that’s all I really know.
I talked to your dad — go pick out a white dress.
It’s a love story, baby just say... yes.
Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh.

‘cause we were both young when I first saw you.

ii. Listen to a Story

Listen to a story and answer the questions.

Once upon a time, there was an island where all the feelings lived: Happiness, Sadness, Knowledge, and all of the others, including Love. One day feelings were told that the island would sink, so all repaired their boats and left.

Love wanted to stay until the last moment. When the island was almost sinking, Love decided to ask for help. Richness was passing by Love in a big boat. Love said, “Richness, can you take me with you?” Richness answered, “No, I can’t. There is a lot of gold and silver in my boat. There is no place for you here.”

Love turned to Vanity for help. “Vanity, please help me!” “I can’t help you, Love. You are all wet and might damage my boat.” Vanity answered.

Sadness was close by so Love asked for help, “Sadness, let me go with you.” “Oh...Love, I am so sad that I need to be by myself!”

Happiness passed by too, but she was so happy that she did not even hear when Love called her! Suddenly, there was a voice, “Come, Love, I will take you.” It was an elder. Love felt so blessed and overjoyed that she even forgot to ask the elder his name. When they arrived at dry land, the elder went his own way.

Later, Love asked Knowledge, another elder, “Who helped me?” “It was Time.” “But why did Time help me?” Knowledge smiled and answered, “Because, only Time is capable of understanding how great Love is.”

6) Who came to Love’s help?
